8 Simple Rules to Follow when Eating on the Run

By Sanai

When I was in my teens and still living at home, eating out was seen as a luxury; we only did it on special occasions. Mom took lunch to work daily, and once in a while, on pay day, she would splurge on take out. Once I moved on my own, eating out became a daily habit. Once my waist line starting increasing and my wallet size started decreasing, I realized I needed to make some changes. It wasn’t easy at first, but after making some comparisons, I noticed that sometimes spending on the unhealthy foods actually cost more than buying something healthy. For instance, a greasy cheeseburger meal in NYC can run you about $8, while a small salad made with mixed greens, tuna, cucumbers and tomato cost $7. You not only save $1, you also save yourself from consuming an exorbitant amount of calories. While, preparing your meals at home is preferable, it isn’t always possible, so here are a few tips and tricks that may save you from packing on that extra weight when eating out:

1. Eat as little as possible. Small portions are best. Save half for later, or split it with a companion.

2. Ditch the condiments. Fast food is usually high in sodium; therefore, adding more by pouring on the condiments
     isn’t necessary.

3. Get whole wheat or whole grain instead of white bread, pasta, or rice.

4. Get it grilled. Better than eating something fried.

5. Eat fruits. Always a great choice when craving something sweet.

6. Keep it simple. Soup, salad, or a sandwich is best.

7. Don’t substitute your meal for something unhealthy (e.g. eat ice cream in place of lunch)

8. Drink plenty of water!!

Most importantly, take time to eat. Nutrients are necessary to keep you functioning throughout the day. Not eating will slow down your metabolism, making it difficult for you to achieve optimum health. If you absolutely cannot stop to eat, grab a yogurt or cottage cheese, it’s quick, available in many places, and may fill you up until you can get a good wholesome meal.
