6 Outdoor Exercise Safety Tips
By Sanai

One of the wonderful things about exercise is that it can be done just about everywhere. Certain precautions should be taken before, during, and after your outdoor escapades.

1. Wear proper clothing - Whether it’s hot or cold, breathable clothing is necessary. Layers are great in the winter and mesh is great in the summer. Never wear plastic suits; it may cause overheating.

2. Wear proper shoes - You will be exercising on different turfs; therefore, do your homework, and buy athletic shoes geared toward what you’ll be doing most. (e.g. shock absorbent shoes for running; shoes with ankle support for playing basketball etc.)

3. Pay attention to your surroundings - Don’t blast your mp3 player, to the point where it distracts you from paying attention to whom, or what is around you. No matter the time of the day, perpetrators could be near.

4. Right place, Right time - Choose your location carefully. Preferably somewhere well lit, and with plenty of people around; if you must do it at night, workout in large groups. Also, make it habit to change your time and location frequently.

5. Work where it’s safe - Make sure your area is clear of debris, rocks, liquids, glass etc. If you’re using park equipment, or fixtures, make sure they are sturdy and aren’t broken.

6. Adjust to your environment - Unlike a temperature controlled gym, while working outdoors, you may endure heat, wind, or cold temps. In hot temps you may not be able to perform intense exercise; therefore, adjust accordingly to avoid overheating. The same may hold true when working in high elevations.
